My Rearend

I have an 83' Camaro that was originally a V-6 and i am confused on what my rearend is. I know its a 10 bolt but is it 7.5, 7.625 and does it have 26 or 28 splines. That is as far as i have made it on determining what it is without taking it apart. The reason i ask is because i have an open rearend, hence the v-6 model. Any knowledge or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, 7.5" and 7.625" are exactly the same gearsets. GM just made the sizing more accurate by calling it 7.625 instead. 28 spline axles weren't used until late 1989 and newer.

WTF?

Then why when looking for parts for my rearend is there the 7.5 and 7.625? I guess the the 7.625 w/26 spline, 7.625 w/28 spline is the only diffrence then. So that puts mine in the 7.5 or 7.625 w/26 splines then huh?
I think i am almost there at the answer i am looking for.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
He told you right; they're exactly the same thing.

In fact, if you go ANYWHERE and look up gears, there is no distinction. The same gears fit them all.

7.75", however, is something else; that's a 9-bolt.

And yes, you would have the 26-spline version, unless it's been changed... which isn't terribly likely. There's ALOT more 26s in the world than 28s, so just by the luck of the draw, a replacement is more likely to be a 26.

As far as pointers, how about this one —>
