Need Opinions

just bought camaro rs 305 with 5 speed. grinding into 3rd gear. might try changing fluid but sure it most likely won't fix the problem. should i go take it to a tranny shop or just look into a used?

If you decide to rebuild, you should go ahead and replace all the syncros and other little stuff that comes in the rebuild kit (you can get a NWC kit for around $120, and a WC kit for about $145). You can probably do this yourself for less than the cost of a whole used tranny, but I believe you need a press for the syncros (somebody confirm/correct me on this one).

A transmission guy isn't gonna bee too terribly cheap, but will probably be more likely to last longer than a used tranny once he's done. Vice versa, a used tranny will probably be cheaper (as much as $600 or as little as $150), but then you're at the mercy of the previous owner's driving habits.

So it really depends on what your mechanical abilities are, and what kind of budget you are working with. If it were me, I'd rebuild it myself.

ive just been really down about this and trouble finding someone to do it for a decent price. the tranny shops keep telling me might be as high as $1800. never worked on a tranny just dropped them and done a clutch or two with help but still looking for maybe an individual to do the job, cutting out the middle man and higher cost

took to one shop yesterday and the guy told me i had a muncie 4spd, i proceeded to tell him it was a 5spd so he said it was a muncie 5spd???? and that it was old and i had transmission problems because it had atf fluid in it, and that it would cost $1000 to fix. so took to another shop a couple of people told me to try and it's going to cost $585. better than $1000 - 1800.

muncie 5 speed?!? this guy has no idea what he's talking about. any transmission guy worth his salt will immediately recognise a Borg Warner 5-speed when he sees it. these are the same trannys that come in 5.0 mustangs, so he should definately have come in contact with one before. avoid that guy at all costs. your '91 should be a World Class model, unless its been swapped before. this is generally the desired version, but i have never seen the difference between World Class (WC) and Non World Class (NWC).
