If your car is auto you have a wiring harness attatched to the shifter that is the reverse lockout harness. this will not allow you to start the car if it is not in either park or neutral. try putting the car in neutral and starting. if that works you car isnt going into park all the way and I would suggest checking the cable and the linkage on the trans to make sure its tight. if it does not start in neutral either you have a problem with the plug on the shifter. take off the shifter plate, and you will see about 5 wires plugged into the shifter in the front, make sure the connections are good, especially the large purple wire as that is the one giving you headaches.

hope this helps---Rob
