Do stock shifters use 1 or 2 cables for auto trans?

Hi guys I am finishing up a V6 manual 5sp to V8 auto swap in an 83 Firebird. The auto shifter has provisions for two cables -- 1 to shift gears on the trans (round body where the cable snaps into the shifter frame) and 1 that only pulls when you push the thumb button on the shifter in (square body where the cable snaps in). What is this thumb activated cable and where does it go? Do I need it? I can't see what this would do. I have the ****er to trans cable installed already.

The other cable is the park lock cable to the ignition lock cylinder on the column.

The car was a 5 spd manual car. Will I be fine without the lock out? I really don't care if the column doesn't lock when the car is parked.

The thumb button does not use a cable.. it uses a spring loaded plastic piece...(my button falls out all the time on me..so i see that plastic bar quite often) I have never noticed a second cable on my shifter... and i have had that area apart more times than i wish t remember.. so I would guess that you would be ok.. the only thing would be is that if the wheel does not lock, then the wheels can turn any direction if that car ever starts to roll..

the cable is there to lock your keys in, so you cant take your keys out while rolling down the highway at 65mph and lock your steering wheel
