10 bolt LSD rebuild, how hard is it?
I have an 83 disc LSD 10 bolt rear that slips more than it limits. I was wondering how hard it is to rebuild and what tools I will need.
Thanks,
Will

rebuilding the unit is not that difficult. The hard part is finding the replacement parts. I think it would be better to get a new posi unit. They are stronger and usually more precise. The only special tools you will need are a torque wrench, a dial indicator with magnetic base, and an in/lb torque wrench. You can actually do without the in/lb wrench and just "feel" the resistance on the pinion gear. I would also suggest you get to know somebody with a press. You will need this to get the bearings on and off.

That unit is either an Eaton Gov-Lock or it's an Auburn.
If it's a Gov-Lock, it will have some funky little weights visible in the "window" of the carrier; if it's an Auburn, it will just have some springs.
If it's a Gov-Lock, it needs to go STRAIGHT TO THE TRASH.
If it's an Auburn, the parts are non-existent.
If they existed, it wouldn't be too hard.
I have a 97 model Auburn, i.e. 14 years newer than yours, that needs service; I called Auburn themselves; they don't even supply parts for one that new.
Time for a new unit.
