I cant help you much on 700R4's but if you are willing to lose OD and go TH350 then do it. It'll be cheaper and stronger in the end. My TH350 sat in a old dead lady's car for over 15 years, got pulled out, then sat outside in the rain for several months. My friend threw everything in a parts washer and did a basic no-frills rebuild with a shift kit. It has lasted for about 2 years with countless 11-12 second 1/4 mile blasts and thousands of miles of street abuse (I mean serious abuse...). Total investment was about $650 for trans, convertor, swap kit, shifter, and misc parts. TH350 swap is extremely easy as long as you select the right parts.
