Alright. I got rearend from a buddy. It was supposed to be a 2 series carrier that has had 3.42 installed. The axles are 26 spline, if that makes a difference. i was going to put the diff and gears in a buddies 86 Olds with 2.41 gears. when we pulled the f-body rearend down the pinion and ring gear are both stamped with 3 series on them. So, this tells me that is was a 3 series from the beginning. But, the guy I got it from assures me that it had 2.73 in it when he got it. Now, my question is, is there any way to run a 3 series carrier in a 2 series rearend, also, I have been told that on one of the axle tubes will be a four digit stamp that will tell you the factory gears ratio. I have found in Haynes mauals where it says this but I can not find it on the axle tubes, is this true. If anyone can help me, please do, it will be greatly appreciated.

2 or 3 series carriers can be used in the same housing, makes no differance. yes you can find the code on the tube if you clean and look long enough, but what's the point in knowing what it use to have.

Thanks for the help. What I have found is that everything will work except the mini spool. Ratech apparently sells a shim kit to make the 7.5 mini spool work in the 7.625. I was wondering if anyone had used this. If they have what do you think of it. Also, does anyone know where I can buy a 7.625 mini spool for 26 splines. Please dont tell me to search. I have called, moser, strange, superior, eaton, richmond, auburn, coleman enterprises, ratech, rider racing, etc. I know that someone has to make one. Thanks

you're confussed, a 7.5 is a 7.62 they interchange and you don't need shims or anything else to use a 7.5 carrier in a 7.62. call summit

I am not confused. I know the carrier will work. Here is the problem. I bought a mini spool for a 7.5. The carrier is a 7.625. The mini spool is to small but they sell a shim kit to make it work. I do not know how I will like this, or how strong it will be.

unless you're on dirt a mini spool won't live long
