700 weird noise; high pressure in 1st and 2nd
need some help here! Just rebuilt a 700 r4 and finally got it running. only thing wrong is that it makes a squawking chirping sound (like metal rubbing on metal kind of sound, ehk ehk ehk). only does this in reverse, manual 2 and low, while sitting still not moving. I put a new pressure regulator valve, spring, .500 boost valve, and .290 low rev valve in the pump. only thing I can come up with is that it might have something to do with the low rev valve since it is the only thing that all 3 gear ranges have in common. I checked line pressure and found as follows:
@ idle; P=100; R=160; N=100; D=100; 3=100; 2=230; 1=220.
@ idle with tv cable pulled out; P=220; R=280; N=220; D=210; 3=210; 2=230; 1=225.
strange that 2 and 1 stayed the same. I can't really tell by looking at a hydraulic chart exactly what would control pressure to these two positions. reverse pressures look normal but it still makes these wierd noises in all three positions. car drives ok, no noticeable shifting problems. noise is the loudest in reverse, and will increase the noise frequency when foot braking or pulling the tv cable.
any help please!!!

according to the manual it should change. but i just found a tci website that lists the pressures of their modified transmissions, and 2 and 1 are the same at idle full tv or not.

ok, yes the pressures are supposed to be the same in manual 2 and 1. I read the book wrong and it was a long day. anyway,, I think i found the problem. the flywheel is very lightly contacting the starter pinion (teeth). when in reverse, 2, or, 1 the line pressure in the tranny is 200- 240 psi. this is pushing out on the converter and flexing the flywheel ever so slightly, just enough to make it contact the starter teeth. tried to move the starter back away a little. it did not move much but the noise is almost gone now. I have a nipendenso starter with a chevy mini starter type front mount on it.

Re: 700 weird noise; high pressure in 1st and 2nd
Just thought that I would share what I finally found about the weird noise. It was definataly a metal aon metal chiping type noise. The hyraulic force in the tranny pushes just enough pressure on the converter to flex the flywheel when at max line pressure in manual 1 and 2 and reverse gear positions. Then the flywheel was rubbing on the starter pinion. Was a hard noise to locate. Put some blue dye on the flywheel's front teeth and drove it. Then checked for wear, was rubbing about 100 degrees worth of rotation. so I took just a little touch of metal off the flywheel with a die grinder. quiet now.
