88 Firebird Detent Cable - 700R4

Why is it when I look up a detent cable for my car with either Autozone or Advance Auto that it shows no listing or not available... Don't rag on me quite yet.. I'm pretty sure it has one, but I bought the car without a engine, the trans is still out at my friends house. I haven't taken a good look at it.. Does it use a vacuum modulator for upshifting?? Or am I gonna have to go through a dealer for the cable... Sorry, this is my first auto trans car that i'm modifying... I hate autos, but I don't have the cash for a T56 quite yet..

It uses a TV cable (throttle valve cable). It controls the line pressure in the transmission. It's ABSOLUTELY mandatory to use one with a 700r4. It can burn up the transmission VERY quickly without it. It does not use a vacuum modulator. The torque converter lockup is computer controlled from the factory. If you're going with carb, and no computer, there's a vacuum controlled lockup kit available.

TV cables can probably be found in a junkyard in just a few minutes. If using TPI, get a TPI cable, as the throttle body is so far forward, that a carb based TV cable is too short.

Thats what I thought... I know without a TV cable, i'll be replacing the trans in a heartbeat... But why can I not get a TV cable for it... Should I get the one listed for a early carbed F-body... I can get one of those, and I'm gonna be running a carb anyway... Will it work..

Now for the torque converter lockup... I've seen many sites about rewiring the pressure switches inside the trans.. Im very fluent with wiring, and it doesnt scare me one bit... All the sites are a little vague as far as exactly HOW to wire it... Any help???

Also, how difficult is it to install a shiftkit, take into account i'm very machanically inclined and the trans is outta the car

im in the process of installing a shift kit this week...ill be putting up pictures as i go. as far as the wiring goes, you can hook the "d" wire up the a switch in the car and it will turn lockup on and off, so when your cruising down the highway...flip it on and it will work like the computer did...just dont leave it flipped all the time. i also purchased a tv cable from napa and it just wasnt right...so i went to the chevy dealer in town and ordered one and it was perfect. cost a bit more but i dont know why the napa one just wouldnt adjust right for a tpi car...maybe napa gave me the wrong one

Ask for a T.V. cable (throttle valve). Any wrecking yard should have tons of them. Also check at Lokar cables, Summit Racing. Jegs etc. shoul shwo all the custom cables online for a few bucks extra over a stock one. I think most of the big names; B+M, TCI, Transgo, Hughes, Painless all have wire kits for the TCC lock-up and/or TV cable kits for TBI/TPI/Carb to 700R4 trans applications.

I like the TransGo people myself and most of their kits are "in-car" installs even though it's better if you do it on a bench having the option IMHO.
In My Humble Opinion...

Oh yes, another company that has lots of 700R4 hot rod stuff is PATC/Raptor. check out their website.

Well, thanks for all the input guys. Looks like i'm gonna go with a good built turbo 350 for the time being... It's coming with a 355 roller motor i'm gonna buy in a few weeks... I just don't trust my stock 700-R4 behind a 400hp engine....
