Dumpster diving

Well, looks like my transmission is probably toast. So Im thinking about going out to a salvage yard to find one (Im REALLY low on funds otherwise I'ld just buy new). So the question is... what should I look for to be sure I get a good tranny as opposed to one thats already toast?

Look for a wrecked car. If it is wrecked, it likely was running well. Smell the fluid and if possible, drop the pan and look for trash inside.

Like he said, wrecks(especially rear enders with no rad/trans cooler damage) are the best. Red fluid = good, brown fluid = bad, water = run away
