Slipping between gears...is it my converter or Pro-Built trans?
Slipping between gears...is it my converter or Pro-Built trans?
I recently installed a new Pro-Built 700R4 and an Edge converter. When I shift 2-3 with my foot on the floor at 6000 RPM, it slips about 500-750 RPM before it shifts. Can converters cause this, or could it be my new trans? Thanks.

Converter just transfers power from the engine to the transmission. It has nothing to do with how a tranny shifts. Sounds like you have a tranny problem. Start with checking fluid levels.
Fluid is full. With the bad vibratrions I've been getting and now this, I'm starting to think my tranny isn't doin that great now.
Edit: Accidently wrote fluid is not full.

Before you start knocking Pro Built, go out and check the adjustment on your TV cable. That works with the governor to control shift points and firmness. Cover YOUR bases first before you knock someones work.

A friend's 700-r4 does the same thing, he hates it. It has done it since day one from being rebuilt before sticking it in his car. Think I had a thread asking about it and Pro-Built said it's the way the clutches/bands apply. One set has to release before the next one can apply so there's a slight delay. Maybe he can shed some light on the subject, my info could be wrong.

EvilCartman, you are correct. While in 2nd the 2/4 band is applied. For the 2-3 shift the 2/4 band is pushed off while the 3/4 clutch pack is applied.
If the 2/4 band is slow to push off, or if the 3/4 clutches engage too quickly, then the trans binds for an instant (in 2 gears at once). If bad enough this can be felt as the vehicle jerks. Followed by a clunk from the rear.
If the 2/4 is fast to push off, or the 3/4 clutches engage too slowly, then the RPMs flair.

If I remember right, just about every car I've heard with a 700-r4 has that delay in the 2-3 shift. You really need to contact Pro-built and talk it over with him to see if it's a normal thing or not.
