'88 IROC transmission question/problem

Am new to this forum, so bear with me! Am looking to buy an '88 IROC-Z, 305 TPI, automatic car. Engine recently rebuilt and is stock except for bigger cam and headers (CAT removed). Transmission rebuilt, but stock. Took the car for a test drive and transmission seemed to always hunt for a different gear, primarily when in Drive. Current owner (6 years) says it has always done that. Car has been professionally repainted and upholestered and is a beautiful car. Since I'm not that knowledgeable on transmissions, is this transmission normal, or am I looking at trouble if I buy the car?

I would certainly pull the dipstick and check the fluid out... should be nice and red, no hint of browning and shouldn't smell burnt (if it does, you'll know it when you smell it)

as for the hunting, it almost sounds like the TV cable is adjusted wrong...

can you give us an example of what your doing when it starts to hunt around?

Does not sound normal. I would recommend filling out your profile. Someone local may be willing to help you.
