How much will i hate 2.73s'?
I just got a 4th gen rear with disc and posi,Replacing my drum and non posi rear. The bad news is the gears are 2.73 in the new axle and 3.42 in my old one.I'm not comfortable swapping the gears,so i'll have to run the 2.73 for awhile.I'm not sure how much i'll loose in performance, but the 3.42s' weren't really doing me any good because all i do is spin one wheel. From what i read,my gas mileage should go up as well as my top speed, but i'm not sure about around town driving, will the car "lug" and will the shift points change at all? Will it be a dog off the line?Anybody with 2.73s' care to let me know what i'm in for.My 350 works pretty well,so i'm hoping i can trade alittle gear for some traction without it hurting to much.

Actually you will lose gas mileage probably. you will have to use dang near WOT to get the car moving then you will be at a really low RPM while cruising wich will make the engine lag really bad. It will still run fine with them but you wont have any power + it will use more gas cause it has to struggle to move the car from every stop.

I don't think you will like the gears at all. You will cruise at low rpm's but that will be the only benefit. You are going to hate driving around until you get better gears.

2.73 is crappy unless you hvae a nice deep first gear like in a 700r4
otherwise its pretty doggy
try to avoid it if at all posible
3.42 and 3.73 were common in alot of the 84 and later stuff

Only way you will hate the 2:73 geared rear is if you listen to the comments. These are made by people who think a low gear is the best and most will have the same as you. As long as the horses are up front the rear is going to move with them.

My '93 came with 2.73's and I got gas milage better than any Honda I knew of
They didn't stop me at all from ripping the tires off the car either, and the top-end was amazing (both in acceleration and top speed)
Since then, I've run 3.42's, 3.73's and 4.10's. (Currently back to 3.73's)
The 3.42's were the best "all around" gears for sure. Good acceleration from a stand still, and decent fuel consumption in city/freeway driving.
The 3.73's and 4.10's will get you off the line better (so long as you can hook up) but you're milage will suck on the freeway, youre top speed will be reduced quite a bit, and the car just won't pull as hard on the freeway either. I was actually surprised at how much harder the 2.73's pulled at freeway speeds over the lower gear ratio's
The 2.73's might not be the best for 1/4 mile acceleration, but you'll be really happy with how quite the car is on the freeway (your motor will be spinning at much lower RPM's) and you'll get way better fuel economy.
I suggest you just give 'em a try. It's only temporary right? Why not. You're car put's out more than enough torque to get you off the line and those 2.73's will keep you in the powerband longer. Wouldn't surprise me if you were even a bit faster then with the 3.42's since you had such a problem with traction earlier....
Oh, and you'll be able to do killer burnouts with 2.73's as well
Let us know how you like them should you choose to run them for a while..

It wont be that bad. It wont be nearly as fast as it was before, but it will fly on the freeway.
I have swapped a 2.56 gear out of an 86 Vette and put in a Moser straight axle 12 bolt with 4.11s, boy that made a difference.

Don't feel dumb Explane,My car was originally a 2.8 like yours, maybe you picked that up from my sig.Anyway,i kind of like what i'm hearing.I'm gonna hopefully get the rear ready to go in the car after my family vacation.I want to rebuild the PBR calipers and replace the flex hoses, rotors and pads before i install it,but the gears are gonna stay for now. Thanks for the encouraging words.

I had them in the vert up untill a couple of months ago. You will be turning a little under 2000 rpm's @ 80 mph with a 700r4 and 25.7 inch tire. I got about 25mpg doing 80 in mine. I then swapped in a 3.42 and get about 24mpg doing 80, I think when I swap in the .63 overdriven t-5 I can get 26-27.
