Hey guys, I'm new to 3rdgen, I usually cruise in the Camarosource.ca forums, but i thought i'd like to come here and ask for and offer some help (i have a digi cam and lots of webspace for pix -- i post some for people who need visuals from my 2.8L v6 1989 camaro)... anyways, here is what is up:
I have always had this problem with my car since I got it... it doesn't want to really kick up and go until you get over 2.5-3k rpm... i mean she will go slowly down the street, but she idles in drive around 2k and loses speed still going 2k...
I have an Auto Trans with a 2.8L v6 as stated above... In March of this year, 2006, the trans went out and I had a transmission mechanic fix my transmission (rebuild kit). What can I do or check to get my rpm's down? At 70 MPH im cruising about 3.1k rpm... But it does take a bit to get up to it.
I know the v6's dont have a TON of HP, but there should be no reason my grandma's van (3.1L v6 chrysler) out accelerates my camaro
and uses less rpm's at that!
Hehe, Thanks guys,
ScottieB
Also, while cruising in any gear (can't hear it in OD because im going at least 50 MPH) at around 2.2-2.4k rpm i have this sound that vibrates or occilates... it's like a rorw rarw rorw sound, i have no clue where it is coming from... besides from under the car -- because the car has to be in gear and you have to rev it up and keep it at those rpm's to hear it... i dunno
What is this WOT i keep seeing in all of these posts?

Well WOT = Wide Open Throttle.
Mine also does a kinda growl thing at 2-3k rpm but i think thats just normal its just how it sounds when you start to get up into the mid RPMs. my brothers 383 does it as it starts to enter the his cams RPM range, and right around there is where these engines start to pick up on power so thats probably what it is.
that minivan has a slightly more powerfull engine and if its like my parents 3.8 van it will kill my car off the line cause of the LOW LOW first gear but will then just fall flat on its face once it hits second gear cause its meant for high way use.
Mine runs at about 2500 at 70ish, which the https://www.thirdgen.org/calculations says is off a bit (2165@70 with stock size Z tires and 3.42 with an auto)but if i factor in Speedo error(possible seems right tho,i must have a lot of really freindly cops in my area if its off), and cheap tach(Equus $30) it is probably perty close. Funny thing is that the equation there says i should have a 3.72 and possibly even a 4.10 wow i have to check that soon. gas mileage sucks mabe thats why i dont thinks so tho.
You could have a stall convertor of more possibly a bad torqe convertor all together if thats possible. Have you checked your trans fluid? if no drive it to some where flat and level, leave the car running in park and check how much is in there. could be low on fluid.
when i got mine it idled at 1500 if at all(died at EVERY stop) so i replaced all the vac line it went down 1k, so i checked/cleaned/adjusted all connectors/sensors/relays and it went down to about 700 then i fixed my exhaust leak(head to manifold was leaking on both sides, im still fight ing that problem to this day. gone though 3 sets of gaskets) and now it idles at 550-600 in drive with the fan off, fan on it sits at 700 again and in park it likes to wander between 6-700rpm. Heh the other day when i let the battery drain all day with the lights on it was barely chuging over at about 300-400 with the alt screaming like hell, did that for about 2 hours then back to normal. probably gonna need a new battery soon cuse of that i bet.
Sorry for the length but its 2 am and i didnt realize that i had typed so much but ill be darned if im gonna delete it now.

The Trans Fluid is full, well, over full :P I checked that yesterday. The trans shop told me back in march (when I had it rebuilt) that I shouldn't have to put any trans oil in it for a very, very, very long time.
btw i like this smilie -->
haha
Anyways, My idle on a warm engine is 600-700, my idle on a cold engine is around 1100. It used to idle in park around 2200, and then in gear around 1500 before my TPS went out -- then I changed it and put it down to 700ish manually (not comp, just how it screws in)... but it has always ran higher rpms to do anything
And, thanks for your post -- does anyone else have any other idea's that could be a problem? or anything else that I could check/replace?
Thanks,
ScottieB

well if it runs high RPMS to get you moving it sounds like you have a stall convertor or as i said before mabe a bad one if thats possible. and having the Trans fluid over full will also cause damage. not shure what but i have always been told to be shure not to over fill a trans.
