84 Z28 Doesn't lock wheels in park

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I just bought a great, 90% restored 84 Z28. It runs and drives great, but has a couple of small issues. One I already posted about in the Carb forum. The other is that when I shift into park, everything is normal except that it doesn't always lock the wheels. It's about 50/50 on whether it will, so I always have to remember to pull the e-brake. Please help.

Greg

do you have any other problems with putting the shifter into any other gear and do you feel the shifter go all the way in or when you push it up do you feel nothing like a smooth motion

No, I don't have any problems with any other gears. I don't know how to answer the second part of your question about how it feels going into park. I suppose the motion is smooth, but I don't have much to compare it to. It's definately not in gear, but I guess it's not really in park either if it rolls down an incline.

If you're lucky you might just have to adjust the shift cable.

I read somewhere that there is a clip/bracket on the shift cable that can cause this problem. Does anyone know anything about this part?

thats what i was getting to, shift cable may be off enough it would go all the way in park, one day do this, PLEASE BE CAREFUL, pull the ebrake up all the way, lock your wheels if you want. have it in reverse, then try to go to park, if it doesnt go, get out and get under the car and push the medal bracket to the front of the car and you will feel it slide into place. my was messed up, one day i didnt have manual 1st, adjusted it and then i couldnt get park. Also check to see the the tabs on the cable fit all the way into the bracked, which is bolted to the pan, the one cable i want you to push on is part of the tranny closer up towards the car on the same side, driver side. Mine was pulling out of the bracket, so i used an old drill bit, the shaft not the drill part, put it in there to keep the tabs from coming out, works great now

Ok, I'm pretty sure I know what you're referring to. It'll be this weekend before I have a chance to get under it.
