cure for flywheel chatter, besides replacing?
Hi, about 6k miles ago had a new lutz clutch put in by a trans shop here, because of bad chatter in 1st gear...it continued, so they replaced it with another, and told me they did what was needed to the flywheel.( which was probably not what they should have done), the clutch works fine, no problems except that it has some chatter in 1st only. I have compensated for it by giving it just enough gas as I let clutch out, and sometimes it is fine, other times some chatter. It is not near as bad as it was before the clutch job, but is annyoying. I talked to two good mechanics, and they both said dollar wise just to live with it, till it gets bad, then they would do the job right. Here is my question.. how much just to replace flywheel with a new one only?, or do you have to replace whole clutch assembly so it matches perfect?, I am assuming like most, that if you have to pay for dropping the unit, might as well bite the bullet and do it all...but my clutch only has 4k milels on it. Are there any other options to correct this small chatter problem... a big burn out???....I do not hot rod my car and have never done a burn out...but am assuming that it would not work, but maybe make it worse.
Here is one more question...is it possible that something else could cause it???, I checked no leaks from the engine on clutch, and as far as we could tell, all mounts were tight. The trans seems in good shape, car only has 69k original milels on it....could the drive shaft/universal joints or even the rear problems cause this to happen? I noticed that someone before me had replaced the rear end from a wrecking yard, do not know why?
The car is a 1983 Camaro za28 5.0 H.O. 5spd. Appreciate any responses to:

Is this a flywheel or clutch problem? Leaking real main seal?

Do you have old worn motor mounts?
What rear end Gear do you have? anything lower than a 3.50 could give a little chatter when starting out.
How about the marcel in the Disk? is there any?

ok, so you posted this in general engine and in trans, good to know.
I couldn't reply to your email, it said error, so:
Usually you want to keep this in the thread, that way it can help
others in the future, and so you can get other points of view on the matter.
You said it only happens in 1st gear, all external sources, like the
clutch itself, or the pilot bearing or TO bearing, would make the same
noise in all gears, ie, shifting into 2nd, 3rd, etc.
