I don't know the exact pinion depth, but I'll let you know if I come across it. If you don't find it, you may consider the procedure in this link to attain it.

Differential Repair & Installation Instructions

Also, here is another link with very useful service and tech info for most GM rears including the 9-bolt. In this article, the 9-bolt is refferred to as the Borg Warner "Model 78." The last thirty or so pages have exploded view diagrams with legends.

This is my 1st post. I wanted to bump this thread as I am researching how to install the parts I got to fix the 9bolt posi in my 89 transam gta. I got a new 3 posi 3 series carrier, new(used) 3.27 gear set, and bearings from 9bolt.com and traded emails w/Glenn. I saw something called a "install kit" on a old koolmeister.com site, and I'm wondering if I'll need it or not.
Any information as far as Installation Instructions goes would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 9 bolt rear end

The installation kit will have the bearings in it, along with a pinion jut, pinion seal, differential and pinion shims, bolts, crush spacer and other small parts needed to install the gears. You might already have some or all of these parts. It is usually best to get the kit along with the gears so that you have everything needed.

As for the pinion depth, it is best to read the contact pattern and set the pinion depth by what the pattern tells you.

Yeah, I traded emails with the guy at 9bolt.com. He never mentioned needing a "install kit" when I ordered the replacement parts.... I'm trying to find out as much research information I can, I'm not mechanically inclined, but my dad is. We may try to search around here for a shop who does this type of work....
Oh, I got the "bearing kit" from 9bolt.com. But really just looks like he sent me 4 bearings. Did not realize we need a kit to replace the posi-carrier & gear set & I think maybe the bearings...

South Carolina. My dad plans to remove the rear axle, and see if we will have the know-how and tools to be able to do this job on the air force base hobby shop.
I may be needing to order some install-kit to include some shims & crush sleeve thing.

Re: 9 bolt rear end

I highly recommend that you find a drivetrain shop near you and have a professional set it up correctly. I think you will be way happier with it. I know times are tough, but it will be money well spent. I doubt that you want to take the chance of messing up that nice new carrier. That's my $0.02!

Well good. I'm glad to hear that. You'll be burning both of those rear tires off in no time!

Well, so far no luck. people we called today didn't seem to know what they were talking about. Got quoted about 550 for labor to do the job, and he said he could not promise that the rear end might howl or wind becuase i got the parts from australia.... I wish I would have research this further before ordering the replacement parts from 9bolt.com. I wonder if I could have went a cheaper route by getting a 12bolt or something. Calling around shops here, sounds like not alot of people do this type of work.

Re: 9 bolt rear end

I got this price quote from a local sports shop. It comes to $409.94 in parts and $525.00 in labor, plus tax is $963.64 in order to fix my 9 bolt. I got a new 9bolt 3 series carrier, used supposedly exc condition 3.27 gear, and bought 9 bolt's bearing kit but this shop says they sent me the wrong bearings! The bearing part # 9bolt sent me was Timken's 2-SET18 LM102949 & 1-SET67 HM88649. There is 1 more bearing they sent me but don't have it in front of me. Anyhow, I wanted to post up the parts & prices of what this speed shop said I needed. I did cross reference against part#'s in the "everything i know about a 9 bolt thread", and boldfaced the ones that matched. Basically everything matches I think except for the bearings. I'm gonna try to save some parts cost by getting the parts myself from autozone and/or ratech. If anybody out there are familiar w/the part#'s, please let me know if you agree that 9bolt sent me the wrong bearing#'s, or if you think the speed shop is in error. Also, you'll see below he says to use 2.5 qts GL6 85W140. But i'm pretty sure elsewhere it says it should be 1.7qts. What does GL6 mean? I'll have to see if that contains posi additive. Looking for a part#'s expert out there, let me know if you see anything in error.
This is the speed shop parts list I need, parts in BOLD I cross-references and found in the "everything i know about 9 bolt" thread:
Sports Shop List:
2.5 Qts GL6 85W140 “AydieJulie?” $17.45,
1-1105 Carrier Shims $37.74,
1-3101 Crush Sleeve $6.76,
1-1104 Pinion Shims $17.80,
2-SET47 Carrier Brgs JL26749F & JL26710 $27.70 à $55.40,
1-HM89446 R. Brg $50.68,
1-HM89410 R “R0ce”? $20.24,
1-7457N Pinion Seal $39.98,
1-710179 RH Seal $27.68,
1-224255 LH Seal $12.12,
4-Brake Parts Cleaner $17.20,
1-RTV $6.99.

Total parts $409 Labor $525.

Sincerely,
James

Re: 9 bolt rear end

trust me i set up rears for a living your pattern will tell you what you need to do there is really no set thousands. Different rears will take different amounts due to variations of castings and different cuts in gears. You can use a pinion depth tool but they arent cheap i have the better part of five bills in mine. Your best bet though is to take it to a repritable shop and have them set them up for you.

Re: 9 bolt rear end

My computer is messed up and the one that I'm using doesn't have my part number list on it, so I can't tell you if the bearing numbers are right or not. I don't like any of the Ratech parts. I recommend getting the parts from DTS or Randy's.
