Need information on 3rd and 4th gen rears
Here's the story. I have an 84 Z28 that was originally a manual transmission car with the L69 in it. But the transmission was changed to an auto. So I hoped that the car would still have the 3.73 gears, or at least 3.42. So yesterday, I started to clean up the rear, took the back cover off and found out that it was 2.73 gears in it
Now I'm in need of a replacement rear. Did the original rear that was in the car have posi/lsd or was it an open?
So I need information on 3rd and 4th gen rears. I read in another topic that the 4th gen rears bolt up, with a little brake work so that's no problem. But I need to know which years of Camaros had 3.73(posi?) rears in them. Also was there any year that had a 12 bolt? Or are they all 10? I need to know any information that you can give me so I know what to get at the junkyard, because I don't have enough money to spend it on a brand new rear.

You have a couple options. Get a 3 series differential and gears from a camaro, firebird or S10 pre 1989. Double check to see that it has the 26 spline axles that your 84 rear should have.
Or get a newer replacement rear. A 1989-1992 10 bolt will slap right in no problem. I should have the 28 spline axles. You need to remove the cover to check gear ratio and to see if it's a posi. The higher end cams and birds should all be posi. Alot of S10s had posi and higher gear ratios, especially if they were a stick truck. Although a S10 rear will not go under our cars without major modifications the diff and gears slap in provided the splines are the same.
Or get a 4th gen rear. These rears will bolt in but they are a different width so you tires may rub (or not) depending. The Zs and T/As probably came with posi and atleast a 3.42 ratio. Again you can never really tell what something has till you pull the cover and check it out!!!

Which set is the 3.73s or do you have two sets. I'd probably want the new ones but that's pricey!! Why aren't you using them??? Any posi units laying around. Maybe an auburn or an eaton tucked away somewhere????

Nah, I am just looking for a cheap junkyard rear, for now. I just need something that will get me on the road, that will work with what I want done to the car. Later on when I get the money I'll probably buy a new rear end, so I dont really want to spend all the money now.
I checked the RPO codes of my car, and the original gears were 3.73s. Stupid red necks around here, changing a perfectly good rear. Now I just need to know which cars originally had the 3.73 gears with posi.
