hey guys i have an 84 trans am with a carbed 305 and 4spd auto. this last week a strange noise and feeling started happening when you take off from a complete standstill fairly hard (like maybe 3000+ rpm i would guess). it feels like a CLUNK comming from the rear and although the car still goes forward fine but it holds back some of the power and the car feels bumpy for about a half a second almost like something is getting caught in the gears. it only does this on takeoffs and only roughly 10% of the time, granted i have not been driving it hard since this started. i should mention that this started after a night of hard driving (3 races with friends) and i have driven it like this for almost 400 highway miles since.

what would you guess? it feels like its comming from the rear but would a tranny that is going out make this kind of a problem? is this a sign of the gears going bad? i would have thought when the gears go bad the car just wont go anywhere but i dont see what else it could be

also i should mention that even more recently there has been a 'chirping' noise like a cricket comming from the dash, or more likely somewhere past the firewall that i can hear through the dash. it starts at 30+ mph and gets faster with speed but not rpms. transmition? i dont think the noises are related but who knows

why don't you try getting under the car and taking a look at the trans mount, i'll bet it's broke. if not take a look at u joints while you're under it.

 

I have had a similar problem, when i would launch at 3 grand or so it will kinda cut of power for a breif second and while doing that you would feel a clunk underneith you, or like coming from the fire wall? i look at my trans mount and saw that there was nothing left...lol...replaced it, and nothing has happend since...try it out and let me know
