hey guys i just heard that in 88 the tpi system controled when the car shifts... and this piticular wont go into 3rd all the time because of the tpi control??? any1 prove 1 of us wrong? i told him he was crazy...

 

The transmission is vacuum controlled, and not run by the computer. The transmissions did not start getting shifted by the PCM until 1994, hence the change from 700R4/4L60 to 4L60E

 

My 88 700r is controlled by the governor and the tv cable, no vacuum line on mine.

 

Oops, didn't mean vacuum, or did I? I don't remember how thirdgens trans were, but I know transmissions in fbodies did not start getting controlled by the PCM/computer until 94.

So if you're original question was, does the TPI engine system control the transmission, yes. If it was, does the TPI computer control it, no.

 

any idea why the car wont go into thrid all the time?

 

probably trash in the governor core or trash in the vb. - when's the last time the fluid and filter were changed?
