Funny Sound In Tranny

90 RS 305 TBI...makes an almost grinding noise when I shift into anygear. Auto trans, doesn't do it when it is shifting while driving but does it when I first put the car into gear. I think it gets worse when it is hot, or at normal oper. temp. It stalls for a second then "clunks" into gear. Any ideas?

I am not too car smart...I am learning slowly but surely, could the u-joints and the driveshaft be bad or need fixed or what...how do I tell if the u joints are bad and where are they located, same goes for drive shaft, well I know where it is but how can I tell if it is bad

More than often on these cars, a loud thunk while shifting out of park means that the U joint is gettin a lil worn out. The u joint is located near the rear of the driveshaft right before the axle. If the driveshaft needs to be replaced, it usually makes a loud obnoxious buzzing vibration while up to speed on the highway. At least this is what I've learned from my car mishaps. If there is no visual confirmation that the u joint needs repair... You might wanna have a mechanic inspect it. Especially if You hear grinding noises!
