The TH250C wasn't used in a thirdgen, it was the TH200C and it has an irregular pan. The square pan with 16 bolts is the TH700R4.

700r4 = overdrive with four forward gears on the indicator plate and perfect rectangle shaped pan

thm200C = cut off corner shaped pan and 11 bolts and only three forward gears on indicator plate and was only in 82 and 83

the stock 700r4 on an 83 is a piece of junk lol.. i should know i have killed 1... better if you want a 700r4 for it to get like an 87+ case and have it rebuilt with some good parts.. then it wil be better..

As Fast68 suggested look at the shift indicator plate on the console. If it has 2 D positions(first one after neutral in a circle)then 2nd and 1st then you have the 4 speed 700R4.I believe this was the only auto trans offered with a V8 in '83(you could still get the 3 speed TH200C,and it was the last year for it in the Camaro, with the 2.5-I4 and the 2.8 V6 in '83).
It became a good trans but,as Angelis83 stated,the early stock versions(pre '87) left a lot to be desired.If it's shifting well,the fluid color is good and it doesn't smell burnt you should be ok.If you're having problems,check the tech articles here https://www.thirdgen.org/technical-articles and here 700 Raptor 700r4 700r4 Transmission 700r4 700r4 700r4 PATC 700r4 700r4 700r4 700r4 700r4 700r4 700r4 700r4 700r4 for good diagnose - troubleshooting guides.

There's no such thing as a 700R4 without the overdrive.

It's possible someone swapped a 700R4 into your car, but didn't put the correct shifter in.

On the 83's the shift plate went like that. 1, 2, 3, D, N, R, P

In 84 on my other burly is went 1, 2, D, OD, N, R ,P

Same transmissions. Both stock transmissions.

So basically you have the right plate and everything... just in 83 they did not mark Overdrive as Overdrive. just drive... Since really there are indeed 4 gears.. and the 4th would be the overdrive.

I didn't see the "3" in there. :P It's a 700R4.

If you don't want it to go into overdrive, put it in 3.
