clunk
what would produce a clunk noise in my 89 RS 305. only occurs when you "get on it at a standstill". the harder you get on it the louder the clunk or bang. does this sound like a universal joint? car wont do it at all when your moving 20+ mph and you get on it. car does have alot of miles on it, 150K+ and i dont know what kind of work was done to it before i bought it. how do you tell the universals are bad without removing the drive shaft. whats the possiblity of there being something wrong with the rear axle? to the best of my knowledge it is the original rear end and eventually i want to go with a limited slip but its not something i wanted to replace just yet. whats my best plan of attack to figure what is wrong with my car. i will be putting her to rest for the winter very very soon but i would like to figure out what is wrong with it before i goes away for the winter. that way i can put it away in perfect running order, waiting for spring, or at least i will know what i need to save up for to fix it.

sounds good, thats not an expensive fix. why would it only do that at when i get on it from a stand-still.
The initial loading of the drive train from a standing start is enough torque to cause the rear of the trans to move upward and smack the trans tunnel with a broken mount. When you're already moving, it hardly ever loads up the drivetrain enough to do this. I strongly recommend you get the Energy Suspension polyurethane mount as a replacement. You'll never have to change the mount again if you buy one of these. Way stronger than the stock rubber POS.
