I've got metal in my axle tube!?
I have read many posts here which has helped me get to do my rear wheel bearings myself. I have a 89 IROC w/ the BW 9 bolt 2.77 ratio. I have had the car for several years and since I bought it I have noticed a noise in the rear. I had heard that these rears made more noise and thought nothing of it. Lately it got louder with a pulsing sound. Tonight I pulled the axle and the bearing is shot and there is metal in the tube. I recently changed the diff fluid and did not notice any metal in the fluid. I also changed the rear rotors which were very hard to get off and may have damaged the bearing then. With the fluid level normally low in these rears, do you think it got into the posi unit & has anyone had any experience with cleaning this up?

Give me some more information on your car and maybe i can help you or steer you in the right direction: Has there been any major work done on the rear end such as a new ring and pinion installed and possibly there is not enough backlash or the gear pattern is out of adjustment. When do you notice the noice on accel or decel right or left turn? Was the fluid change recently possibly not enough friction modifyer added. Metal in the unit can damage bearings as well as the friciton plates for the posi. Aslo how many miles on this car. more things you can come up with the easier it may be to narrow it down for you
Thanks for the reply. I wish I could have received more help a couple of weeks ago when I really needed it from this site. I did the outer wheel bearings myself and it still made noise after that, so I took it to Watkins Automotive in Memphis, TN (they race cars in their spare time so I thought they would be a good choice to work on the Borg Warner). He did it in 2 days and it is as Quiet as a mouse now. I wanted to do it myself, but I am moving and just did'nt have the time. He did it for $ 350. He said carier bearings were all chewed up. Adios
