I hate Problems.... T-56 flywheel / starter not full disengaged HELP!!
Well Here Is where the problems start and never end...
I am in the process of changing my 84 Mazda RX-7 with a Chevy conversion
with a T-5 to a 96 Camaro T-56. I was trying to get the whole thing done tonight but....
I'm never that lucky
I bought the flywheel from a salvage yard and it looked fine.
But when I had if resurfaced the guy said it was a little warp.
So I set it on flat ground and rocked it back and forth and it was warped
by like a half 1/16th so I figure ahh what the heck it should work.
I spun the whole flywheel and it's the same every where.
(It took me a whole week and a lot of phone call to find one)
by the by it is a one piece rear main seal and is an 87 block.
I didn't have the stock starter because it had some wired 14in 55lb
flywheel and a starter to fit it. So I have a mini high torque starter
,that worked fine in my 1990 iroc, and stuck it on there and when I go to put my flywheel on, the starter hits and comes in to the flywheel about 1mm. I have loosed the starter and tried to move it back a little, didn't work. and I tried pushing the starter gear in move and it moves a little but it's not enough and it won't stay there.
I inclueded Pictures
So now I'm
and thinking great now what do I have to buy.
If anyone know of a BFH fix on something to fix this please
give me that knowledge and power to fix it
.
well here’s hoping for a quick fix
Thanks, JR

come to think of it you can remove the starter from the mount and add spacers to them right? I was looking at them on eBay where they come with them. I didn't get one though when I ordered mine. If this is a fix about how thick should I get the spacer.. in other words how far from the flywheel sould I make it if I can find the spacers? Anyone know where I can get them?
Thanks, JR
O and heres a picture of the engine bay, should be up next week with
ported heads, freshly recoated jet-hot headers, big cam, and full new exhaust
and of coures my T-56 hopefully.

I beleave there is shims you can get to fix that, pretty sure my starter came with some but I was lucky enought not to have to use them.

you can buy shims at autozone in the "help" section... in a red package..
What I do not understand though, is you are using a warped flywheel.
"If you cannot afford to do it right the first time can you afford to do it again?"
Also, you using a 153 tooth flywheel and a matching starter?

thanks nelapse all go see tomorrow if they have them.
And yes it is a matched starter, like I said it worked on my 90 I-roc.
As for using the slightly warped flywheel the big word budget comes to mind.I spent $155 on this flywheel and it dose have a 30 day warranty on it but, that’s only for replacement or store credit and.. of course they don't have another one and can't locate another one.
I really would buy a lightweight flywheel, IF I wasn't for the fact that I'm poring the rest of my money it to getting my heads ported/polished, headers jet-hot coated, new cam, valves, spring, retainers, and the fact that I just bought this T-56 It all come down to the I'M BROKE factor.
I can take a tranny out an in to replace a flywheel with no down time.
what I don't want to do it tear into the top of my motor again because I used cheap stuff, because I bought a $450 flywheel.
So there you have it why I'm using a slightly warped flywheel
all let you know how it works out
.
thanks for your help, JR

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
That's clearly some kind of a "mini-starter".
Some of those use a round shim kit that goes between the aluminum block and the starter motor itself, like these right here, to set that. Not the ones that go between the aluminum block and the engine.
Looks like your starter has some in it, and they need to be taken out.

I do not understand why a machine shop cannot resurface your wheel to make it not warped. Even if the teeth are warped they could make it true.
