You won't be able to decipher axle codes from the VIN.By the eight digit she originally came with a LB9 305(and the came only with the 700R4) and she's a Van Nuys built car..If your '86 still has the SPID(it's the RPO sheet)you can find the RPO for the axle code. The sheet is located on the glovebox door or sometimes in the left rear storage compartment.Make sure the VIN on the sheet matches your car.A build sheet would also give the data but finding one is rare.
The axle code and build date were stamped into the foward side(facing front) of the right axle tube.It may or may not be there. You can also remove the rear cover and get the numbers off the ring and pinion. This is the only definite way of id'ing the ratio.

thanks coolram, yea, I ran the codes on another site, and it's legit 305 TPI car...so I didn't get all the codes off the inside of the center console as my son had to go to work. I will do that tonight. I crawled under the car and couldn't find the tag or code stamped on the axle tube, so i will run those console codes tonight...thanks a ton for your feedback!

You are most welcome. The only tag would be the posi tag that would have been under one of the lower rear cover bolts. The axle codes are stamped, but not deeply, into the right tube as I said.Sometimes rust buildup will take the codes with it when you clean it.Use some degreaser ond a hard bristle, not wire,to clean the surface. If the code stampings are still there they will be a midways between the center section and the axle flange on,or near, the top section of the tube.
