9-bolt rebuild time.. where to find parts??

hey guys.. time to rebuild the posi in my 9 bolt. I put on a T/A girdle this summer which gave me extra fluid capacity but I didn't think to add extra posi additive, therefore I think that's why I burnt out my posi. Its still a posi rear, but I really have to lay on it to get both tires to break loose.. and still it doesn't happen every time.

I assume I just need new posi cones. Any clue where a good source for 9 bolt parts can be found?

You'll be hard pressed to find new posi cones anywhere for a 9 bolt. Nobody sells new ones AFAIK. I would suggest shimming your existing cones/posi unit. The sooner you do it, the better since you're already slipping, which is wearing the cones more and more. There's a really good writeup in the tech articles here on how to go about shimming the 9 bolt posi unit. According to that article, if your cones have completely bottomed out, your posi is toast, but if they haven't bottomed out yet, you should be able to shim it up to make it work right again. Happy reading!

BTW- since teh 9 bolt is a cone type posi it doesn't require a posi additive. Only the clutch typre require the aditive.

The article here on thirdgen has you machine the face of the cones as long as they haven't bottomed out. Then shim it back when you assemble it.

Jaws Gear & Axle sells some 9-bolt stuff for a reasonable price. The only other place I've found is Reider Racing, but just a R/P set from them is almost $400.

There was a post on here about a month ago where some members said you can get parts from Sam Strano Performance, but I think it was just bearings, gears, etc., no posi cones IIRC.

Unfortunately, just like it says in the tech article on here, all you can do is shim it back up as long as the cones haven't bottomed out in the carrier yet. If they have bottomed out already, your only other option is to buy another used one that still works, and shim it good and tight before you install it. A buddy of mine is in the exact same position with his 9 bolt right now, and that's what we're gonna do with his. He already picked up another used one that still works ok, so we figure we'll nip it in the bud and shim it up before we install it. Otherwise, it might end up burning out in short order just like the one that's in there now. Even though the 9 bolts are somewhat stronger than the 10 bolts, this is the exact reason why I'm sticking with my 10 bolt instead. It's just not worth it to me to have to scour the ends of the earth to find parts for an obsolete rearend. I figure if I ever need anything stronger than the stock 10 bolt, I'll just have to bite the bullet and cough up the cash for a Moser 12 bolt or 9 inch. I can buy parts at reasonable prices all day long right here in my town for a 10 bolt at least. I read an old article about the 89 Turbo T/A's that was published back when the cars were new, and they were complaining back then about the 9 bolt posi units burning out, so that's enough warning for me to stay away from them!

You might want to send a PM to Drain89. He's the guy who wrote a really long sticky post with a lot of 9 bolt info. I'm guessing he means you have to mill the cones to give them a new surface so they'll be able to grip after it's shimmed up tight again.
