28 spline???

I always thought the 90-92 cars were the only ones with 28 spline axles, but now I heard that certain f-bodies starting in 87 or 88 got them as well. Is this true or are all 89 and back 26 spline axles?

They didn't change to 28 spline axles until late in 1989. Everything before then was 26 spline

Thanks.

Do you (or anyone else) know if the axles used in the 9 bolt are the same as the 10 bolt? Are they 26 spline as well?

9-bolt axles are 28 spline, and they are not the same as 10-bolt axles.

The nine bolt axles bolt in like a 9" ford. No c clip in diff.

New 28 spline aftermarket axles which will be better than any factory axle are only about $125 each.

Thanks to all who have responded.

The guy who said some cars had 28 spline from 87-89 must have been referring to the 9 bolt axles. I wasn't aware that they were different, and without the c clip they must be more durable. I will probably just go with new axles right away since I have a new carrier and gear set for a 28 spline set up.

Thanks for the link. It looks like I'll be placing an order with Summit for those axles and an ring and pinion install kit, then I should be set to rebuild the rear end on my Iroc.
