Shifter Cable

Okay, here's the deal. I've tried to install two shifter cables on my '85 z28. I bought a cheap cable from Advance Auto and the plastic clips on the cable that hold it in place to the bracket on the side of the tranny wont clip in. It's very frustrating. Should I get a better cable and which one should i get?

Also, should the tranny & shifter lever be in any specific position or is it best to have it in PARK when installing a new cable? Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated so i dont break anymore cables!

Which clip should I install first, the clip on the tranny bracket or the clip to the bracket up by the shifter that holds the cable in place?

Thanks

Put the tranny and shifter in "N" for cable install.
