ring and pinion markings

ring and pinion markings

here a couple a pictures of the ring and pinion markings, whats your comments?


Here's the drive side


Here's the coast side, kinda hard to see..




I'm almost positive the pinion is within .003-.004, i'm gonna check it again tomorrow.

Did I use too much marking compound??

Pinion is in too far. You'll need to reduce the amount of shim under the pinion bearing to move it outward providing that's a 10 bolt.

you should be 100% positive the pinion is within .000". set the pinion depth, set the pinion preload, set the back lash and the contact patten will be right.

Here's some more pictures, pinion is on, dead on. backlash is .008.








I might need to clean off the compound and check it again. ( i didn't take off the old compound)

Pinion is low - pattern is running on the "toe" edge of the teeth.
you should be 100% positive the pinion is within .000". set the pinion depth, set the pinion preload, set the back lash and the contact patten will be right.

whats wrong with a gov lock? i thought that was better than a cone type?

Wait till one side catches slightly earlier than the other and the pieces come flying through the cover. Then you'll know why the cone types are better. - Better yet for most use is the torsion type units. No clutches to wear out, cruises around like an open diff, bites like a locker.
