"World Class", which is a One-Minute-Manager / Total Quality / Six Sigma / Management By Objective / ISO-9000 / Insert Your Favorite Pop Culture Phrase For "I'm An Incompetent And Ignorant Newbie Manager And I Just Read This Cool Book And Now I'm All Fired Up About It!!!" Here / buzzword, simply got borrowed from the popular "quality" literature of the day by Borg-Warner for some reason, who used it to refer to the 2nd design of the T-5. I hope that the lazy tool that did that got fired for his trendy lack of originality. B-W did eventually get forced out of the transmission business, which I suppose illustrates the poor quality of their management at that time.
In these particular cars, the 2nd design began to be specified by GM in 88. AFAIK that included the 6-cyl cars. Other mfrs began specifying the newer design earlier or later, and GM may have started using it in other years in other vehicle models.
No that does not mean that a later 6-cyl transmission is "as good as" a V8 one.

I've heard of a few leftover NWC T5's being put in some of the early 88 cars, but by and large they all got the WC units starting in that year. Get familiar with the trans i.d. tag #'s and you'll be able to tell which style it is every time. Go to 5speeds.com's website and click on the T5 section. They have an online trans tag decoder that has all of them listed. The numbers you want to pay attention to are 1352-XXX. The last three digits designate which model and application the trans is for.
