Alternative automatics
Other than the ubiquitous 700-R4 and the 200-4R, what other automatics can go in a third-gen? Any 5- or 6-speed autos out there that will go in?
no other auto trans with overdrive.....
Unless you're going race only type power, just run a 700 or a 200 and go on with life. There's plenty of people on this board running 10's or faster on 700r's.
- You can get a 4l80e to fit, but it takes some trans tunnel notching and several other mods to make it fit, plus it will require either a manual vb (not reccomended for street use) or an expensive stand-alone computer to opertae it. - The biggest issue is for almost any non-oe trans, you have to either buy/build a torque arm mount, or switch to a remote mounted tq arm.

like i started to mention in that other thread.... its not cheap and its pretty envolved to goto the newer stuff...
really, this isnt the board to find out about anything new like that...
heres a couple threads about the 6L80e... you can search on LS1tech for more info... but you wont find a turnkey howto on doing it just yet...

if you're willing to wait a year, your best bet will be on snagging one from a new camaro, or one of the other non-Ybody RWD platforms.
