Weird noise sometimes
Allright I can not figure this one out. I have had in on a lift and have had the cover off the rear and I can't find ****. Sometimes but not every time (like every other time) when I start off from a stop my rear will make a clunking noise. Even weirder then that sometimes it will keep doing it as I start to drive like every time it rotates over to that point. Most of the time it makes the noise it only does it once as I start to move. I figured I broke a tooth or something but I can't seem to see anything with the cover off. But I don't understand why it doesn't do it everytime and all the time. Please if you can trhink of anything please please tell me I am going crazy trying to figure it out. I keeping driving the car hard too and nothing has brole and its been several months. Thanks, Ron.

Might not be an internal diff problem. Check the swaybar endlinks, trans mount, torque arm mount, etc. just to make sure it's not something simple.

First, did you roll the gears and look at every tooth? Is the pinion pin in good condition?
Next, are the U-joints is good shape? No rust leaking out of the bearing caps, no tight spots when you roll the driveshaft.
Then, is it possible the trans has a chipped tooth? (manual trans)
What if the torque arm is loose...I'm reaching here.

Car is an auto 90 Formula
I had a 91 with as T-5 ad I use to blow the trans mount all the time so I was thinking that was what this was but no. The mounts for the sway bar and torque are were good. My dad is a mechanic so we took it to the shop threw it on the lift but didn't want to take the whole rear apart so we took off the cover checked to see if there was any play and looked and the teeth to make sure nothing was broke and changed the fluid. Of all of the gears you can see they looked ok but that doesn't mean one wasn't broken but it just seems weird that it doesn't happen every time. Ohh I also thought it was the U-joint so I checked that and made sure that giant nut on the front of the rear was tight. Also put in a remanufactured trans from GM a few years ago.
