Waste of money.

Get one out of a LS1 car; 98-up Z28 or Trans Am.

no problem

from 82 to 02 the drive shaft is the same length weather it is a automatic, 5-speed or even a 6-speed there is a dampner on the frount of the factory shaft witch will also help with the rotateing vibs. that the third gens are notorious for. If you can find one for under $200 bucks buy it. If not get one from imperal drive shafts (summit or jegs). Its worth the investment

IIRC, the length is different for TH350's. Alum shafts, however, should all be the same length, 41 1/2" from U-joint center to U-joint center. The JG1 alum shaft has a metal label attached with p/n: 10085375. The LS1 shaft is p/n: 12564003. Try the yards. These shafts are more plentiful than people believe (I once purchased and sold 70+ JG1's). The only difficulty I encountered was that the pre-88 cars, including my own, required another U-joint. I used CarQuest #3-3130.

I recently put a 3.5" aluminium driveshaft with solid joints. Even thought my stock one was in exellent condition, it still made a noticebly positive difference.
I was looking for a used one in exellent condition and they were between 120-200$. Then I found this guy on ebay, he makes you a new coustom aluminium driveshaft for 185$ (+ 45$f for a new transmission yoke that I would recomend).
Mine is 41.5" center to center of the bearing caps. Should be the same size from 82-2002. Only difference the joints size. But the seller new ewerithing I needet.

The 10min. job is easy.

1- Thake out the four bolts holding the C clip to the rear yoke bearing caps.

2- Slide the drive shaft out of the thranmission. Little oil will come out that
is normal.
3- Check the rubber seal on the transmission, if brocken replace. (was in
good condition on mine)
4- Slide in the new driveshaft (if you diden't go with a new transmission
yoke you'll have to take the old one from the old shaft.....better spend
45$ more)
5- Bolt it back to the rear yoke (you may put some locktyte on the bolts),
be carefull to not let the bearing caps fall off wile intalling (a neadle
bearing could fall over).....put some tape.

Sorry for my English.

If two-piece means that you have a V6, yes, the alum shaft will fit. You might consider providing more info about your car in your profile.

all of this is great guys thanks, but does anyone know for apsolute certainty that a certain year with the aluminum drive shaft will bolt right in place with no modification needed for my 1986 v8 automatic trans am? i jsut don't want to buy the wrong thing and be stuck with a wrong piece and then spend more money on another one playing the guessing game. i might jsut go to that guy who makes them we'll see. i'll also look into some of the post you guys said above about the 98 + years

Any third or fouthgen alum shaft (those mentioned above) will bolt into your car. If you have reservations about a particular shaft, check the tail of the shaft for the part numbers I provide. Because your car is an 86, I believe you'll require a new rear U regardless of the shaft you use. Try the shaft first. If the U doesn't fit, use the part number I list above. Good luck.

What about a V6 thirdgen Automatic. Will an LS1 driveshaft fit? I've had vibrations forever, and none of my rims are bent and all are balanced. New tires too! Must be the driveshaft.

Yes the 6-cyl cars and the V8 ones from 84 to 2002 use the same drive shaft.

Try IROCZDAVE's website below. Scroll to the bottom of the linked page, and you see that he's showing one for sale right now. He's a very good guy to do business with as well.

http://www.thirdgenusa.com/thirdgenusafirebirdparts.htm

He prolly just has the one at the moment(if he even still has it), but he seems to find them pretty often, so keep checking in with him from time-to-time if you don't find one. I've purchased one from him myself, but I've also found one in a junkyard too, so they're apparently not as rare as you'd think. So check your local yards too.

Like Sofa said(meant), spending $300-$400 on a new one from a website is a waste of money, because you can prolly find a good used one for half that or less.

Right: my original post was supposed to mean, except that I wasn't very clear, that buying a "new" one is a waste of money when you can buy a perfectly good used one for as cheap as they are. About $150 usually.

Like LA said, keep checking, if you don't find one right away. Don't be in a big hurry. Being a used part, it's not like somebody can "order" one for you; you just have to be there when one shows up out of a wrecked car.

Do like I said..There is a nationwide "Hotline" that junkyards use to find parts...Just ask the people to use it for you...There is no cost....Guy in South Houston called for me, and within minutes had located mine...I also found my Posi rearend the same way....save alot of running around....Tom
