Engine out. Should I replace the Torque Convertor?

Hi guys,

I've got the engine out for replacement just now. My 89 350TPI L98 dropped a valve and died! I've already got numerous mods, including Lingenfelter runners, ported base, ported plenum, larger TB, Hooker 2210's, true duals, etc.

The torque convertor that's in the car doesn't lock up. I think it may have been changed for a slightly higher stall speed and to a non-lock up model by a previous owner.

One of my friends, RMK, changed his TC for a higher stall Vigilante and saw a good improvement in acceleration.

Would you recommend replacing it whilst the engine is out?

Thanks.

If your thinking about it, now would be the best time to do it. It would suck to put it all back together and then decide to pull it all apart again.

I agree. While the motor is out and you're rebuilding, go for the upgrade on those hard to access items.

Good luck

Thanks chaps.

What stall speed would you go for? Which brand of TC?

I'm erring towards the Vigilante Lockup convertor with a 2800rpm stall.

Vigilante puts out quality converters from what I hear. I'd say somewhere in the range of 2,800 to 3,200 would be good to have and still be friendly on the street.
