automatic or manual? You can get a beefed up 700R4 to work, or swap to a non-overdrive beefed up TH350 or TH400. For a manual, either a Tremec TKO 5-speed or a Tremec T56 6-speed.

I'd recommend a Ram Powergrip, Spec Stage 2 or 3, or at least a Centerforce Dual Friction. Keep in mind that if you decide to go with a T56, good clutches are ridiculously expensive. If you decide on a Tremec TKO, they use the same 26 spline clutch that the factory T5's do, so they're quite a bit cheaper.

i had a t5 in my old 91. i think myself quite fortunate to not have grenaded it even behing a lowly 305. clutches were a real PITA though.

my friend does transmissions for GM and he says if you race your car you will regret the t-56 but if you are looking for gas mileage the t-56 will be your best friend. he says the gears are very close together and it is really really easy to miss a gear when racing with a t-56. if you are at 450hp you may need to look into beefing up a t56 or a t5
