axle swap

ok i have a daily driven rs that i think the rear-end is going out in. it has the original 2.73 10bolt. i also have a 88iroc in the garage that is awaiting a full blown resto. so my question is, is it worth it to swap from the rs rear end to the posi 2.73 iroc rear and they are both drum. and would i see any performance achievements from this swap? but mainly how hard would this be to do? or would u just get some better gears and slap them in the posi rear end then put it under the rs, however i am on a very tight budget. any help?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
is it worth it
No. It is not "worth it" to ME, for YOU to do that.

I can't answer about the "worth it" part, since I'm inherently worthless anyway. I wouldn't know "worth" if it walked up and slapped me in the face. But I can tell you, that all you have to do, is take the posi carrier out of the one rear, and put it in the other. Leave the ring gears with the rears they started out life in; i.e. take them off, and put the RS ring gear on the posi carrier, and put the IROC's ring gear on the zero-traction carrier, and put both cars back together.

Total expense should be 4 quarts of lube, 1 bottle of posi additive, 2 schmears of silicone, and a little time.

Assuming of course, that the other rear is also a 10-bolt. If it's not - that is, if it's a 9-bolt - then nothing interchanges, and none of this is possible.

You won't really notice a big "performance improvement" if you're still going to be running 2.73's. Posi is nice to have, but the only way you'll really notice a "seat of the pants" difference would be to change gear ratios. It'd cost you a few pennies, but you'd be better off buying a ring gear spacer and some 3 series gears to put in with the posi unit. Instead of a ring gear spacer, you can also buy 3 series gears that are machined thicker to work with a 2 series carrier. Everyone has their own preferences, but to me personally, it wouldn't be worth my time to change it to posi while still running 2.73's.
