To much stall for a stock L98 ??
Just got a good deal on a new TCI streetfight 700R4 , ally pan and a TCI streetfighter torque converter.
My initial thinking is that its way to much stall for my engine. Its a L98 with headers , hooker catback with electric cutouts , air foil , msd ignition module and a few other light mods.
What would happen if i placed that in my mildly mod'd engine ?? If a stall speed is 3000 rpm does that mean that the car will rev to that speed before taking off ? If so then i presume that with a mainly stock TPI it would be pointless using that TC as the majority of power is at relatively low revs and then dies at around 4000rpm
thanks you
Craig

Stall speed indicates the RPM at which the TC will be transfering all the engines power into the tranny. The car will still drive almost like normal, its not like you have to floor it to get out of a parking stall
And you are right, thats way too much stall for that motor. The TPIs are low end torque monsters, by the time that thing flashed to 3000rpm your out of steam

If you've gotta replace your converter get an S-10 converter for a 4.3L, they stall ~2200. It's a fairly significant step up from a stock converter, cheap and easily available. With these motors being torquey a tight converter is definitely to your advantage.

U get the higher stall and still have a tight torque converter even with the higher stall. This is exactly what u want, not a lesser BandM or TCI(lol, had too), it will also get u proven reliability as well.
I run 2 Vigilantes and dont really consider other converters anymore, they cost me more but have been 100% bulletproof and exactly as promised.
There are a couple other alternatives out there like ACT and whoever else Pro-Built uses as well.
Definitely stick with a quality converter either way.
later
