Swapping an automatic for manual transmission
Swapping an automatic for manual transmission
i have a 305 87 IROC, i want to swap my automatic for a manual transmition.
i have did some research about the T5 and T56, my main issue is i want a 4 gear manual.
Any one is aware of one, or has done a swap on a third gen that can shade some light on it for me??
Any advice will be well appreciated, as i am a bit lost..
Thanx Ya' all !!!

Re: Swaping an automatic for Manual transsmition
I put a T5 in my 88 Formula as well as an Auto in an 88 GTA (I swapped tranny's with a buddy of mine).
It's a pretty straight forward swap, hardest parts are going to be the pedals and the hole for the clutch master cylinder.
These are the parts you need:
V8 T5/ or T56 from 93-97 LT1
1pc rear main seal Flywheel (if your motor is a 1pc)
Pedals from a manual car
Hydraulics
clutch kit
pilot bushing (or bearing)
shifter
special crossmember if you go with the T56
rubber boot that covers the hole in the trans tunnel you cut.
Connector and wire to wire up the reverse lights
and a custom prom to maximize performance. Car will run fine with the stock automatic prom, I ran mine like that for about a year.
And I think that is about it.
Should only take 1 day to do it. We did both cars at the same time in one weekend on my driveway.

To swap in a 4 speed, you'll need to round up the clutch linkage, driveshaft, and crossmember from an 82-83 V8 f-body. These used the mechanical clutch linkage, which will work with an older 4 speed. You'll need a bellhousing from an older 4 speed car (60's-70's vintage), since the T5 bellhousings mount the trans slanted. Yours will need to mounted straight up. I'd recommend a Borg-Warner Super T10 or a Muncie. The Saginaws that came in the early thirdgens are junk from what members here have had to say about them. You'll also have to figure out a way to adapt the torque arm to the tail shaft. A custom crossmember from Spohn should take care of that. The hydrualic linkage used from 84-92 won't work with the old 4 speed because the bellhousing mounts the trans tilted. That's about all the issues I can think of off the top of my head that you're probably going to encounter doing this swap.
