The Truth About Shifters...

ok guys...ive been thinking about getting either a megashifter console shifter or dual gate console shifter, what are the REAL problems with these shifters...do they shift firm or soft, is the installation hard or easy, ive heard people swear by the megashifter, but ive heard people curse it as well, (the same with the dual gate) i like the dual gate and am thinking about purchasing one even though they are discontinued; i have connections. if you do not like either of the shifters, are there ways to modify the stock auto-shifter. to me, cant you just throw the stock chifter all the way to "1", and bump shift it all the way to drive?...maybe im just stupid, but it would be nice to get some helpful answers....thanks beforehand for all the help

Re: The Truth About Shifters...

The Dual Gate is awful. It's just the old stock "his 'n' hers" shifter from the late 60s, like was in GTOs and 442s and such. Very prone to jumping 2 gears at a time instead of just one. More than one person has blown up a motor when it went from 2 to N instead of D in a race.

The Megashifter, like any aftermarket one, has its own issues; not least of which is install difficulties. It also doesn't fit some of these cars, especially certain years of Firebird, very well. But out of all the ones out there, people seem to think it's the best. All of them look like an alien space ship landed next to your car and a piece fell off. None of them are any more reliable than a properly working stock one. If yours is just sloppy or something, try replacing the cable; it's cheap and not too hard, and might make an AMAZING difference.

A shifter won't change the shifts from "hard" to "soft" or any other way. All it does, is tell the transmission what gear you want it in. If you want the transmission to shift differently, a shifter is not the right thing.
