TO bearing?
TO bearing?
Bear with me, I'm a bit new to posting in reference to my car(s).
I have a 1982 Camaro z28, with a 400 in it at the moment; Automatic tranny.
Last night I was driving on the interstate when the guy in front of me blew a tire - couldn't swerve due to surrounding traffic or anything - and I ran over the blown out tire. It smacked my left tire - which made a 'POP' rivaled only by a shotgun blast in my opinion. I pulled over at the next available exit and checked the car. There were no visible signs of damage. However, when I got back in and began to accelerate, I noticed a grinding noise in the car that sounded like I was dragging something (I thought I was dragging a muffler) - so I stopped and got out again to check - but, again, nothing. So I got back in and began dirivng it again, and noticed that the noise stopped once it gained a bit of speed (15-20mph or so).
Once I arrived home, I decided to mess with it and see how it acted - to see if it was just drive or if it acted funny in general. I noticed that it didn't appreciate me putting it into reverse. It was sit and stall in reverse at first, then I switched back to drive, back to reverse, and it accepted it... with no noise. Then I put it into park, and while sitting there the noise was prevelant. I put it back into drive with no noise while not moving. Back into reverse, no prblems, back into park with the noise manifesting again.
It sounds like a frind mixed with a dragging noise and sort of a whine thrown in there. It seems to come more-so from the rear-end - but it's a bit difficult to tell.
I'm not quite sure what this happens to be. I was thinking synchro, but I'm second guessing now... throw-out bearing, maybe?
I'm guessing the 'incident' with the tire had to have some play in it - seeing as how it ran fine previously. I do plan to take it to a mechanic on Monday, but I'd like to get an idea of what's going on before going there and having them tell me 15 different things.
Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks for your time.

Re: TO bearing?
Automatic tranny
synchro
throw-out bearing
Sounds to me more like the sheet metal cover for the torque converter got bent and is now rubbing the converter; or like the tire piece is stuck under the car somewhere and rubbing the drive shaft.
You don't need a "mechanic" for any of the above. Just get under the car and look at stuff. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out what's up.
Re: TO bearing?
Ah, thank you. I'm still a bit new to the car lingo in regards to Automatic vs. Manual. And I've read endless posts regarding similar 'grinding' issues, so I was just jumping to conclusions... I'll make a note not to do that anymore.
I sincerely appreciate the help! I'll definitely take a solid look today. Thank you again!
