new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
Okay the car is a '87 TPI camaro that blew up its original 700R4 so i purchased a new TCI streetfighter and a bowtie overdrive 2200 torque converter.
The transmission was bolted up today along with the TC and now i cant drive the car at all.
The gearbox selects gears fine but as soon as i select a gear from park it just dies on me. i tried going past reverse and selecting drive and it just tweaked the wheels and then stalled.
The original transmission had an electrical conection with 4 prongs on it but the new TCI trans was blanked off so the they left the connection off could this be the issue ?? I also adjusted the TV cable so i dont think this is the issue
Any ideas guys ??

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
I know that my Torque converter has lock up but i'm wondering if i've been sold a a non lock up converter ??
the guy i brought it off had brought it for a hot rod project that he sold on. so he may have given me the wrong info .
What would be the symptons of using a non lock up transmission and a lock torque converter ??

sounds like you've hit the nail on the head. your torque converter is staying locked. the trans has most probably benn modded for a non-lock up converter.

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
I think your right given the fact the TCI transmission has no provision for the std wiring.
I really dont want to send the TC back as i am based in the U.K , is there a harness i can buy to make the streetfighter box lock up ??

My personal experiences with tci have been quite bad. Unusual problems like this seem to happen often.
The tcc valve can be accessed with the pan down. You can check the valve to be sure it is not bound up. Possibly the solenoid is stuck or the internal wiring is wrong.

Try going from park directly to manual 1st, if the tcc is stuck this can sometimes pop it loose.

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
I'll give that a go first thing tuesday.
What about the possibility my trans is non lock up . would that give me the symptons i've got when using a lock up torque converter like mine ??
Floor guy if the trans was lock up would the electrical connection be present rather than being blanked off like mine is ? and if the trans is non lock up could i get a wiring harness to make it lock up rather than sending the TC back
anyone got a picture of the tcc valve so i know what i'm looking for

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
having looked at the TCI website i think i can say almost 100% my trans is non lock. this page says that all lock up trans are equipped with a wiring harness and my trans has no wiring present at all
http://www.compperformancegroupstore...ct_Code=371000
all i need to confirm now is that mixing non lock up trans with lock up TC will give me the symptons i've got i.e stalling when enaging gear if the brake is on. also i'm sure that if i rev'd it and engaged gear it would take off like a rocket so its not a selection problem

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
When they convert a lockup trans to non lock up, the lock up valve is removed and blocked off with an aftermarket sleeve. If this is the case, all you can do is install a non lock up converter.

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
what would happen if you installed a lock up converter in a non lock up tranny ??
Pete as i mentioned above , sening the TC back isn't really an option due to my location . do you know if it would be simple enough to wire the trans up for lock , i've heard about easy install wiring kits.

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
You would have to undo the non lock up mods to allow the lock up converter to work. Presumably, replacing the block off valve with the correct tcc valve assembly would be required. Also the wiring harness (internal) and solenoid/pressure switches would also need to be aquired and installed. Also the case connector would need to be aquired and installed to allow for this swap.
The NON LOCKUP converters I sell involve removing the check ball in the input shaft capsule and cutting approx 3/8 inch off the input shaft. If this was done, you will need a new input shaft and drum as well for the correct year trans you have.
Unfortunately, you have a major problem with no simple solution.

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
Thanks for the info Pete
I spoke to TCI today and they said that i need to place my internal wiring from my old box into the TCI box, straight forward job they said
and then check to see if the valve moves , if so then it has not been block but if it does not move then i can purchase a new one from them.
does that sound about right ?
where can this valve be found

Remove the 2 10mm bolts that retain the lock up solenoid to the pump. The valve is just above the c clip and plate directly above the solenoid snout.

Re: new transmission and TC - stalling when selecting gear
Job sorted
pete
I removed all the internal wiring , pressure switch , tcc valve from my old box and placed it in the new box and works a treat, cracking firm shift with instant gear changes and the higher stall speed is great.
Only little problem i have now is that i renewed the shift cable and now it wont quite go into park properly although all the other gears are fine ??

You can tweak the cable adjustment at the bolt that connects the cably to the shift arm on the side of the trans. Super easy fix.
