Re: Stall converter?

The S-10 converter (if for a 700R4 tranny) is a cheap route. It happens that the stall on the S-series is higher stock than that of the V8 counterpart. Most guys just scrounge up one from a donor truck for a quick n cheap resolution. A GM converter is physically a good converter, but I am unsure of what exactly the stall will be. My cam is a .488/.510 and 234/244 dur. I have been recommended from a 2900-3500 stall speed. I also have 3.42:1 gears and the 700R4. IMO you would benefit also from gears deeper than 2.73s. Stall maybe 2500-3000 area with that cam.

Re: Stall converter?

Ok. I just found out the stock 4.3 converter is like a 'corvette' stock converter and is a 2200 stall behind a V8. On the V6 its only a 15-1600 stall. I think with like a Dayco 'tranny shop replacement brand' you can get up to a 2500 stall in stock size. If you go any higher, they are a smaller size which will be better in a performance sense but will generate more heat. TCI,Vigilante,B&M,etc. are probably better and more exact on stall rating, but more costly. Key is to match cam/stall from what I hear

Re: Stall converter?

As I've mentioned in other posts, the stall speed of a converter depends on how much torque is put into it. Also there are many more factors about converters than just stall speed. You could have 3 different converters, all the same size and stall speed and they'll all perform differently behind the same engine.

Torque converters are one thing that you can honestly say "you get what you pay for". A cheap converter is not a performance converter. The 8" race converter in my car is around $1000. It also stalls at 6000 rpm behind my engine.

You can go a cheap route by using things like S10 converters but buying a brand name torque converter such as TCI is a better route to take. My converter is made by JW. There are plenty of good quality converters available.
