Re: stalls in reverse unless given gas help!

This is in your Automatic? I would think so, It could be a multitide of things, I would check all your vaccuum lines, and I would check your shift linkage from the shifter to the 700-R4 (I assume thats what you have in it..) if the linkage is sticky, it could only partially slide the shuttle that puts the trans into Reverse, and idle does not produce enough oil pressure to move it the rest of the way, and creates a sort of "hydraulic lock" which kills the engine, but if you were to rev it slightly it would make enough pressure to sort of "pop" that valve over and then you'd be in business...

Check your trans fluid too, see if its dirty and burnt.

Basically check all the hoses and linkages, and if nothing obvious, its probably something inside the throttle-body with one of those shuttles. which is kind of a bummer to fix..

QUestion: If you put it into reverse and rev it a little bit, and then put your foot back on the brake, does it idle fine (while in reverse)??

ill try and see what happens when I put it into reverse and rev the engine then hit the brake tomorrow. I know idle and oil pressure play a part in this. Ive always had idle problems usually once i can keep the car running it warms up and idles fine. but every so often ive noticed it wants tro die when i shift in reverse and i give it gas to keeep it going.

yes automatic in my 1986 trans am 305 5.0 v8 tpi. i have a running lean engine code 44. the o2 sensor is only a few months old. i did have a maf error code 34 but it went away.

i bought an oil pressure sensor just holding onto it until i know i need to replace mine. also bought both maf relays. i've put any kind of fuel injector cleaner known to man hoping i just have clogged injectors.

still have to test my fuel pressure and already replaced the fuel filter.

anytihng else you need to know?
----------
oh one more thing brand new refurbished throttle body new gaskets and repalced most hoses and new iac and new tps. i set my tps to .54.

Yeah you might want to plumb that pressure gauge into the transmission and see what kind of pressures you build at idle in forward and reverse gears as well as neutral..

I don't think its a fuel problem, it would be consistent in the forward gears most likely..

Re: stalls in reverse unless given gas help!

ok thanks guys. i'll give those a looking into. hopefully not a too exspensive fix. but at the moment im more conerned about my engine running lean. narrowed it down to injectors or fuel pressure regulator.

thanks again i'll see what i can find.

When I had leaking injectors and a bad fuel pressure regulator my car did the samething.
