Viper T56 swap more than its worth?
Has anyone ever swapped an 05 t-56 out of a viper.
I want to put it in my 88 formula with a 305 tpi, but once i get done with the swap im replacing the motor.
I heard one good thing about the viper tailshaft housing locates the shifter perfect in the firebirds.
Will i need a new flywheel to accept an lt1 cluch setup with the hydrualic release bearing or will my stock flywheel bolt up to an lt1 clutch. will i need a gm style trans plate behind the bellhousing for my throwout to work right, becuase now it is for a viper?
The things I am worried about is there is no speedo gear on the output shaft but there is a spot for one also the housing looks like there is a spot for another application to have a hole drill to accept a speedo gear? Should I take the speedo gear and senor off my t-5 drill the hole out of the t56 housing and use it or are the shafts different spline?
This transmisson uses a hydraulic throwout bearing, not sure if i need to get a gm rear plate for the bellhousing to match a 98 or up gm t-56, or since it doesn't need a clutch fork can i just get the bellhousing?
I beleive this trans has a longer input shaft but do i need an extended pilot bearing or what kind do i use?
Another thing is the trans input shaft wobbles alot is this normail for a t56, I only paid 150 for it and 3rd syncros were replaced by a student that got the transmission for free from a dealer warranty claim. also the input shaft is harder and harder to turn in reverse until it pops out of gear and grinds?
If anyone has tried swapping a viper transmisson rather than a gm t-56 could you please help me or let me know if i am forgetting anything. i have been trying to come up with a price on how much this is going to cost me, or should i just sell the transmission even though my t-5 is about to die.

Just wondering what mods need to be done to get the viper style t56 to work, already know about bellhousing, wondering if i need the adapter plate for gm or can i keep the viper adapter plate (the thing the bellhousing bolts to, in between the trans and bellhousing.)?

I think there are alot more differences on this trans. I think the input shaft is a different spline. Also that trans will be more like the ls1 trans then an lt1 trans. Good luck it sounds like alot of specialty parts need for this swap.

Well, let me share my experiance and maybe it can clear some things up.
First off, i have an LS1 main case, with viper internals, and a viper tailshaft. This transmission was purchased through RPM transmissions, who i highly recommend. The transmission was not cheap, but it has all the goodies, and performs great..
First issue - a viper main case has a much different bolt pattern than an LS1, or any other chevy mounting style, which means an adaptor plate would not be availiable (that i know of). MY setup, uses a ls1 to t-5 adaptor plate that mcleod makes. It allows me to bolt my transmission up to any bellhousing, including a stock one, made for a t-5 bolt pattern.
Second issue. The viper tailshaft DOES locate the shifter more forward, however, too forward. There IS no good way - the LS1 tailshaft located it pretty far back, and the viper puts it about an inch to forward. I ended creating a bracket to located the handle back.
Third issue - The speedometer sensor in the viper is a VDO style VSS... Why is this an issue? It needs a 5v source. Not a horribly big deal, but its something extra. You will also still need to use the SGI box.
Fourth issue - You will need to fabricate your own crossmember for the transmission...
As far as the input shaft goes, i do believe it is a different spline count. The output shaft is also bigger, requiering a the DS to be shortened and have a different yoke put in place.

It would almost seem like a better deal to get a blown up ls1 T56 and swap the guts out of the viper box into it.

thanks since I got a good deal i guess it would be good for gutting out the viper internals.
