700R4...When to use overdrive???

Just have a simple question about my 87 Camaro....As i wrote on the topic I have a 700R4 transmission with overdrive...

The guy I've bought the car from said that I must not use the overdrive gear until I reach speeds of about 70km/h...Is this true???

I'am no transmission expert but like GM wrote in their manuals you can use overdrive on almost any kind of driving...And I also know that if you are in a very "tracking" road with average speeds of 50km/h so the transmission gearing up and down, and up and down all the time, it is more likely to change into Drive....

But anyway..that guy who told me this said that this is damaging the clutch and other componements in my gearbox...Is this true??...I don't believe him but I have to ask other guys...For the time I use my overdrive for almost all the time....

You can use OD most anytime. If you are climbing a hill or the transmission cannot make up its mind as to what gear to stay in, then grab the lever and bring it back to hold the gear. Better to use a little more gas than let the transmission shift up and down, as this will tear it up quickly.

Re: 700R4...When to use overdrive???

With European style, stop and go driving, it's better to drive in D with speeds under 80KM/u, when driving faster shift to overdrive.
I have driven my Firebird for about 13 years that way now....!
With European speedlimits and heavy traffic, the automatic will constantly shift between D and overdrive when driving in the city, this will destroy the automatic very soon!!

Yeah..I agree to that one...But you see, where I live it is almost no city around...I am living in a small village and the other villages and citie's around here are small places so the roads are okay around here...And the speed limits..Well you can say i don't follow them all the time lol

Re: 700R4...When to use overdrive???

So let me get this right for myself.

Driving through my residential area cruising around town...DONT USE OVERDRIVE.

Get on the freeway or country roads (45+MPH) USE OVERDRIVE.

What does overdrive do exactly?

From what I remember it keeps the car in high gears...? not sure though. LMK.

-Thanks

Re: 700R4...When to use overdrive???

You're right about the use of the gearshifter.
Overdrive lowers the RPM's and by doing so, it lowers gas consumption, but, when in overdrive, the engine has no "torque" at low speeds, so it has to shift down to a lower gear, fi when you accelerate.
So at citycruising speeds, the slightest touch of the accelerator will result in shifting down, when in OD, and by doing so, it will shorten the life of the autotrans.
Keep it in D (or third) in the city, and shift to DD (overdrive) when on the highway!

Re: 700R4...When to use overdrive???

Well since thats out of the way....what would I do about a jerking tranny? Could I just change fluids (Royal Purple MAX ATF) and pan and filter (Deep pan for 1 extra quart)?

Also....when shifting I have to let off the gas in order for it to shift into the next gear...what should I do about this tranny?

Thanks alot.

Re: 700R4...When to use overdrive???

You could try that, but it sounds to me the tranny has reached the end of it's life, though.......
What colour is the ATF, and does it smell burned?
