speedo sensor replacement

i have a 1988 trans am GTA with the digital dash and for some reason the speedo just shows zero all the time. the previous owner told me that after he got the transmission rebuilt and the shift kit put in, the sensor went out, he also said he had it replaced a few times and it would work for a while and would then quit. Anyways, i want the speedometer to work. so question 1

Is the speedo sensor really my problem?

If i replace the sensor will it just go out again?

How hard is it to replace this sensor?

Re: speedo sensor replacement

Removing and replacing the sensor is nor hard. Before spending money, pull out the sensor. 1 10mm bolt will be removed and it will pull out. Closely inspect the plastic gear that is on the back side of it. That is called the driven gear. Also inspect the drive gear on the tailshaft. With a flashlight, you will get a good look at it in the tailhousing hole. If either of these 2 gears show wear, replace them. They are $20 or less at the dealer.

A 1/2 a cup or less will come out if the car is parked level or with the nose down.
