Re: parking problems

I would try adjusting the cable that runs from your shifter in the car to the shift lever on the driver's side of the transmission. Hopefully that will solve the problem. It sounds like it's just not knocking the lever all the way into place on the transmission.

Re: parking problems

It's a combination of both because you need to put the shift lever into a certain gear and then adjust the cable so that the console shifter matches. I think it's neutral but, I don't recall and my Chilton repair manual is across town. The last time I did it was when I was in high school and that was a long time ago. I do remember it's fairly easy and quick though.

Re: parking problems

SHIFT CONTROL CABLE

Place the shifter in the car to Neutral.

Loosen the cable attachement on the bracket on the transmission.

Rotate the bracket on the transmission clockwise to the park position then back one click to Neutral.

Tighten the cable attachment to 11 ft-lbs of torque. The lever MUST be held out of park when torquing the nut.

SHIFT LINKAGE

Ubolt your cable from the bracket on the transmission.

Move the bracket on the transmission into Neutral.

Place your shifter in the car in Neutral.

Install the cable to the bracket on the transmission and adjust the cable so the pin has free movement.

Install and tighten the nut to the pin.

That should fix the issue if it's the shift cable causing it.

Re: parking problems

NP, glad you got it worked out. Where did the cable break at? I had the one in my 88 break down at the retaining point on the shifter linkage on the tranny. Had to rig it in place till I could get a new one. Lots of fun that was popping off.
