shift link broke??
on my 700R4, the link on the trans. that the cable connects to broke...well, the stud that holds it on did. i have a B&M shifter and it has its own link...and i recently got a different trans. so i was taking the stock link off when the stud broke off.
what now? can this be changed, or should i just weld the B&M link on? normally i wouldn't choose welding, but the link does fit on a grove, so the grove is what takes the pressure on the shifts and the weld would be there just to hold it on. what do you guys think?
if it is changable...can it be done with the trans in the car, or does it need to come out?
thanks,
jimmy

Re: shift link broke??
Should be replaceable without too much of an ordeal....
Drop the pan, it comes right out, IIRC. Might have to take the valve body out in a 700, but that's not too hard; just make sure you know where the check ***** go, that will fall out.
Would be a great time to add a drain plug to your pan, if it doesn't already have one.
Better late than never, eh??

Re: shift link broke??
No need to drop the pan. If you're talking about the actual shift cable, which I believe you are, just disconnect it from your shifter and pull it out.
It's a simple job. Get a new one at your local parts store and re-run it.
Pull it out from inside the car and drop it in from inside the car.
You'll have to swap the bracket as the new cable won't come with one.
Bolt the bracket to the pan with the cable installed to that.
Put the trans in neutral both at the shifter and trans. 2 spots back from full forward on both.
Tighten the nut at the trans.
Attach to shifter with the clip.
You may need to adjust a little at the trans connection to get it into park good but all you need to do is loosen the bolt and adjust.
I just paid $30 for a new cable.
If you're talking about the linkage that goes directly into the trans housing then disregard my post and pay attention to sofakingdom.

yeah, i am talking about the linkage going into the trans housing. does anyone know where i can get another one?...it's just the stud that holds the link on that comes from inside the trans.

Junkyard, transmission shop
I think you'll find that there's a little more to it than "just a stud" though
