Transmission removal question
I just removed the transmission (700r4) from my friends 88 TBI firebird. My question is what does everyone do about the engine after they have removed the tranny? Is it OK to leave it hanging by just the motor mounts or should I prop it up somehow to prevent the engine from sagging? I feel that it would put a lot of stress on the mounts because when I start lowering the jack the engine will move down with it quite a ways. Right now the car is still on the lift with a jack on the flexplate and we need to get it down and park the car for the night.

Re: Transmission removal question
Support it with a jack and a block of wood under the oil pan.

Re: Transmission removal question
that is almost exactly what I did. however we need to move the car and using a jack isn't exactly how we'd like to move it as surface heights change underneath the car. We were able to got a couple feet of chain and hook it on the driver side A-arm, then tightly fit it in between the flex plate and the oil pan using a towel to place in between the chain a flex plate in order to protect it. Then hook it up to the other A-arm. Seems to have worked just fine and holds very well with no damage to the flex plate.
